Personal Project

Final Evaluation

My final artwork represents my journey throughout the Digital Art class. At the start, I was not confident with the work I was producing or the programs I was using, and my skills were limited. But with each project, my confidence grew and so did my skill set. Like how the characters grow in size and in opacity in the artwork.

There were some challenges during this project like the time were my photos didn’t quite work well together, or when I had to spray adhesive onto my paper springs to get them to stick to the photo.

I think that the most successful part about my artwork is the fact that it is 3D. It was difficult to create, but I believe it gives it a unique aspect.

While studying Digital Art, I learnt how to use applications like Photoshop and Illustrator. I wish I had to learn how to use a stanley knife effectively because I did a shocking job at cutting my poster board. The most significant thing that I have learnt is the importance of the art principles and elements. Before this class, I didn’t see much use of them, but now, when I look at an artwork I can identify the elements and principles and how the artist used them effectively. I brought this into my own work and I believe that’s what made it successful.

If I were to study Digital Art again I would like to learn more about the applications. I know the basics of Photoshop and Illustrator, but I would like to expand that knowledge and be able to produce the best artwork I can using those skills.

This is my final blog post. Thank you for following alongside me during my journey through this class.

Progress Report #3

This is my third and final progress shot for this assessment. For this stage, I have fixed my previous problem regarding the amount of space on the left side of the artwork. To do this, I added another image and made it four sandwiched photos instead of three.

I have also created my handcrafted elements, and during my next lesson I will assemble the artwork and it will be ready for my final evaluation.

Difficulties did arise while creating this artwork, however, I overcame them and I am striving to complete the best that I can. Next, I will be posting the end result.

Progress Report #2

This is my second progress shot. So far, I have combined the three photos I have taken. This is the second stage, and after this I shall be combining the handcrafted elements with this photoshopped artwork.

There is a major difficulty in this artwork. There is too much empty space on the left side of the hallway! With consultation, I have found a way to fill the empty space. I will display this in my third progress shot.

I hope all goes well and the composition turns out how I wanted it to.

Progress Report #1

This is my first of three progress shots. So far, I have taken the photos I wish to use in my final project. This is the first stage in the artwork. After this, I will be photoshopping and sandwiching the photos together.

The only difficulty I faced during this first part of my artwork was taking the photos from the right angle. It was a small difficulty, but it seemed like every photo I took was either too dark, or too light. I used the shutter mode on the camera to achieve a balance.

I am happy with how the photos turned out and I am ready to progress to the next stage.

Artist Intention

I intend to create a portrait and place artwork. I wish to combine aspects of my first concept development and my second concept. My aim is to combine the use of focal point from my second concept development, with the use of unity from my first concept.

I plan to have four photos, one with a landscape and a flight of stairs which will be the background, and the other three of the same character in different places which will make up the foreground and middle ground. I will then ‘sandwich’ these photos together to create a composite photograph. In the foreground of my work, I plan to have the character’s first position in full opacity at the top of a flight of stairs. In the middle ground, I will have the next two character’s positions, one with less opacity and with less size. The character who is larger and less opaque will be further up the flight of stairs than the smallest character, but not as far up as the character in the foreground. This will give the effect that the character has walked up the staircase. I used this idea in my first concept development.

I would then like the print the artwork  and the photo of the background on A2 paper. From there, I may carefully cut out the characters from each photo. I will create little paper spirals, and glue them on the back of the characters, so when I am to stick them back on, it creates a 3D effect. The bigger the character gets, the more volume the spiral gets. If I do not have time to do this, I will still print it, but I will just mount it on a white or black frame.

I will be using photoshop to produce the first half of this work. The other elements will be photography and hand made. Unity is very important in this work because I do not want to make it overcrowded.

Concept Development #3

This is my third and final concept development post. To create this artwork, I drew a picture using a reference from a photo I took, then cut and copied bits of that photo onto the drawing from photoshop. This is not my favourite concept development. However, there are some aspects I like about it. The first aspect is the way the blue eye shadow and the yellow pencil compliment each other. Secondly, I like how I added the blue to the clouds and the people below the subway. Sadly, this concept development didn’t turn out the way I thought it was going to, but aspects of it may make it to my final design.

For my next post I will be drawing aspects of concept developments and creating an artist intention.

Concept Development #2

In this concept development I used a photo that I took and vectored the portrait in it. I used the eyedropper tool on Adobe Illustrator to pick up colours to use for the shapes. An aspect I like about this artwork is how the background is all soft and blurry, this makes the portrait stand out. If I decided to use this concept in my final design, I would take the time to create more details to make it more realistic. I would also think about adding more light and highlights to the portrait as you can see the sun in the top right corner of the picture.

This is still the second stage of the project, the third concept development will be the last.

Concept Development #1

In this concept development, I took nine different portrait photos in the city. Each set of three were taken at the same setting. So I put them all on photoshop and used the polygon tool to cut and paste them all onto one image. I then selected the characters that I had copied and pasted and put the opacity down to give off the moving effect. My favourite out of these three is the artwork where she is walking up the staircase. I would like to bring aspects of that one into my final project.

This is the second stage of the project so I nothing is final, but I am definitely thinking of using this this idea.

Research Task

The theme for this project is Portrait, Pattern, Place. This project requires me to incorporate physical artwork with digital artwork. The combination for example could be a pattern drawn on paper and traced in illustrator.

I chose this vintage style of photos, because if I am going into portrait, or photography, I want to carry some ideas from old photos to my project.

For my research tasks, I created a list of things that just entered my mind, a drawing page of things that floated in my head and collected some photos that I thought were inspiring.
